Approval of biocidal active substances

Active substances are arguably the most important ingredients in biocidal products, as they determine the activity of the product when used against its target organisms. Active substances are subject to strict requirements. On the one hand, they must be effective and selective against the relevant target organisms. On the other hand, they must pose as little risk as possible to humans, animals and the environment. These requirements mean that not every substance can be used as an active substance without further ado. Rather, active substances require approval before they may be used as such in biocidal products.
